PROJECT 1A

PRE-DESIGN STUDIES & ANALYSIS

In this project phase, our group conducted a comprehensive site investigation, study, and analysis to understand the key components essential for our design process. We immersed ourselves in the site, focusing on 'sensing the place' to gain intimate familiarity with its current conditions. This hands-on approach allowed us to relate the site's characteristics to the project's target users and objectives. Through this process, we developed insights that informed our strategy and programme development, ensuring our final design would be both appropriate and responsive to the site's context and requirements.

Project Reflection -

Reflecting on Project P1(A), I'm struck by the growth and camaraderie experienced during our Johor Bahru site analysis. This final studio group project was both an academic exercise and a bonding experience. As we explored the city, we honed our analytical skills and strengthened friendships. I learned the value of diverse perspectives in urban analysis and the importance of teamwork in addressing complex design challenges. This experience enhanced my professional skills and created lasting memories for my architectural journey.

PROJECT 1B

DESIGN STRATEGIES & EXPLORATION

Students are required to dive deeper into our group's project proposal from Project 1a. Under my tutor's guidance, I have individually explored multiple design angles, focusing on functionality, effectiveness, spatial quality, and form composition. We are required to analyze, test, and challenge ideas through various schemes. I have represented my design exploration through a series of sketches, study models, diagrams, and both 2D and 3D drawings. This process includes conceptual floor plans, sections, elevations, axonometric views, perspectives, and modeling. By thoroughly investigating our 3P framework—people, place, and project—I aim to elevate our initial concept to new heights of creativity and practicality.

Project P1(b) was a transformative experience that expanded my understanding of architectural design. It challenged me to explore diverse design strategies while considering practical aspects like building regulations. Through this project, I learned to balance creativity with functionality and legal requirements, which helped me grow as an architect. Investigating different architectural programmes opened my eyes to the complexity of design planning and pushed me to think innovatively.

Understanding building by-laws was a significant revelation, adding a practical dimension to my creative process. This project wasn't just about creating a design; it was about developing a more comprehensive approach to architecture. The skills and insights I gained have shaped my perspective, equipping me with a more holistic understanding of the design process and preparing me for future architectural challenges.

PROJECT 1C

FINAL DESIGN PRESENTATION & REPORT

Subsequent to Project 1b Schematic Design phase, students are required to further develop and finalize developing Urban Room project scheme. This stage requires a fully resolved design that incorporates environmental and technological strategies, along with technical resolution. Lectures on poetics, tectonics, sustainability, building safety compliance, façade design, and presentation techniques have benefited us. Student work must demonstrate critical thinking, structural sense, environmental sensitivity, legal compliance, and high-level exploration.

Project Reflection -

Reflecting on Project P1(C), the culmination of our architectural journey this semester, I'm filled with a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration. Preparing for the final presentation was an intense process that pushed me to refine my ideas and hone my presentation skills. I'm immensely grateful for the guidance of our tutor, Ms Nani, whose insights and encouragement were instrumental in shaping my project and boosting my confidence.

The critiques from the final presentation were particularly insightful. While nerve-wracking, they provided a fresh perspective on my work, highlighting both strengths and areas for growth. These comments have given me a clear direction for future improvements and have deepened my understanding of architectural critique.

Although the process was undeniably tiring, I will forever cherish this experience as an architecture student. The late nights, the camaraderie with classmates, the breakthroughs after struggling with a design problem – all of these moments have shaped me not just as a future architect, but as a person.
