TUTORIAL EXERCISES

Tutorials exercises are conducted by students as practices and exercises in order to introduce the basics to develop skills in visualization and communicate through free-hand drawings. There are in total 4 tutorial exercise which includes self-expression drawing, tonal values and rendering, architectural lettering and colouring media and scale.

01 SELF-EXPRESSION :

By the second week of our classes, we are required to produce an A3 drawing of our favourite place where we would like to visit in the future or have visited before to express ourselves. I decided to draw the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy as I would to visit there soon. This exercise is to train students to express through drawings and designs.

The given tutorial exercises was a great opportunity to learn and be introduced to different drawing and colouring methods before starting to work on our first project. Not only that, I was also able to improve my architectural lettering through our third tutorial exercise for upcoming projects.

Project 1

PROJECT 1

MOVIE POSTER

For our second project, students are to work individually to design and produce a freehand drawing of a movie poster to express the student's narrative. In this project, students are to include elements such as figure drawing, natural elements, man-made objects and lettering in various sizes in their movie poster design.

For the second project, I had fun coming up with a narrative to create a movie poster and also trying out different colouring media such as crayons, water colours and colour pencils. Not only that, this project also allowed me to improve my drawing and design skills through sketches and drawings to convey the emotions and story narrative.

Project 2

PROJECT 2

FARNSWORTH HOUSE

For our second project, it requires students to draw a set of architectural 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional orthographic drawings of the Farnsworth House by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe. This project was divided into 3 parts, P2A (plan, section, elevations), P2B (axonometric drawing) and P2C (perspectives drawings) and has a weekly submission schedule. The final outcome of this project is to allow students to explore manual projection methods emphasizing on architectural convention, symbols and line quality.

For our second project, I was able to improve the quality of my orthographic drawing. Besides that, I was also introduced and learned the techniques on how to produce an axonometric and perspective drawings (one-point and two-point perspective) through tutorials which helped me to produce the drawings needed for my final project.

Project 3

PROJECT 3

INTEGRATION WITH ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO I

(PRESENTATION BOARD AND MODEL MAKING PROCESS)

For our third and final project, students are required to integrate our model (sensory space) from our final project of our Architectural Design I module to create a minimum of an A1 presentation board for our Design Communication module. The presentation board is to include all 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional orthographic drawings of our model. The outcome of this project is to allow students to illustrate architectural forms through expression of space in the form of 3D modelling and to produce composition of presentation board for architectural design project.

Project Reflection -

For our final project, I struggled with the designing and model making stage to create a poetic sensorial space at first. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with my final outcome as I was able to combine ideas and design principles from the previous two project of our studio module to craft a series of sensory space to express my personal journey and emotions during the pandemic. Not only that, I was also able to apply what I have learned from our Farnsworth House project to create orthographic and abstract drawing of my model.

discipline specific knowledge -

At the end of this module, I have been introduced and gained a lot of knowledge towards communication through drawings and design. Making a poster, orthographic drawings and presentation board composition is a knowledge that will stick with me through my studies in future projects. Online tutorial classes are also a way for me to get feedback from my tutor Ms. Carol. Her feedbacks allowed me to improve through each projects.

thinking and problem solving skills -

For all three of the projects, I was able to think critically and creatively when creating drawings and model making. Whenever I was struggling during the design and development stage, I reached out to my friends, tutors and also looked up for inspirations from different sources to help me improve progressively from each project to another.

intrapersonal skills -

Taking this class online has its challenges. However, I was able to overcome those challenges with the support of my friends and tutor by consistently giving support and feedbacks when i'm having a hard time with my project. Time management was also important to me especially when i'm taking the class online as I am easily distracted when i'm at home which results in procrastination. I schedule my time carefully to avoid working on projects on the eleventh hour.
